Whistler Mountain
Guide
Whistler
Blackcomb mountains combined have over 8,100 skiable
acres. One vertical mile. Two mountains connected
by a pedestrian Village. More than 200 trails.
Three glaciers. 38 lifts. Twelve alpine bowls.
The numbers speak for themselves. Whistler Blackcomb
resort is blessed with an average of 10.22 metres
/ 402 inches / 33.5 ft per year on the summit,
as measured at the Pig Alley Weather Station on
Whistler Mountain (elevation 1,660 metres/ 5,445
feet). The snow base record for Whistler Mountain
is 504 cm (197 inches, 16.4 feet) set in 1973/74.
That season it snowed significantly in March and
April when traditionally these months receive
less snowfall.
Whistler Mountain is a peak
in the Fitzsimmons Range on the edge of Garibaldi
Provincial Park, and the location of the Whistler-Blackcomb
ski resort and the town of Whistler, British Columbia.
The original name of the mountain was London Mountain,
and the valley where the town is was called Alta
Lake. With the advent of the ski resort in the
late 1960s the name was changed to Whistler to
represent the whistling calls of the marmots that
lived in the alpine areas of the mountain. Because
of the mountain's proximity to Garibaldi Provincial
Park, ski lifts are regularly used to quickly
access the alpine, and ski tour into the park.
The summit is home to the Whistler Peak chair,
and this makes it one of the most traveled summits
in BC. The mountain forms part of a major ski
and snowboard resort. More than 1.1 million people
go to Whistler resort each year.
Whistler mountain is the original ski venue location
from years past then Blackcomb mountain was created
years later.
